A Thai Short Film Wins a Special Jury Prize at Pacific Meridian Film Festival

Pimpaka Towira, a Thai director, has received a special jury prize for her short film My Father at the International Film Festival of Asian Pacific Countries, “Pacific Meridian,” held recently in Vladivostok.
My Father won the prize for its complete picture of social Thai issues told in a short form. The story features a father in a small family in a village who is forced to quit his job as a train station janitor because of his protest letter to the authorities. But he refuses to keep his mouth shut, even though his family is facing hard times. He leaves for Bangkok in search of justice and joins a mass rally. Finally he loses and returns to his quiet neighborhood, morally crushed.
Pimpaka is the first female Thai director to be noticed by international viewers and critics. She studied film at Thammasat University. Her debut feature, One Night Husband, an ambitious attempt to combine an experimental style with an accessible narrative, was premiered in the International Forum of New Cinema at the Berlin International Film Festival 2003. She was the program director for the Bangkok Film Festivals in 2001, 2008, and 2009 and a jury member at number of international film festivals.
